V&A's National School Programme

DesignLab Nation

Our Creative team had the pleasure of hosting a number of students over the past few months in partnership with this year’s V&A DesignLab Nation project ‘Textiles for Traditions’, the groups were set a brief to design a textile piece to support their routines, rituals or traditions.

The students from three different schools spent half a day with us learning all about traditional rug design, production and how our design process works. We worked together from initial drawing, creation of the CADs, through to how we prepare for production and ending with a tour to see how we pick and pack orders to send out to customers.

Cartwright Hall was the perfect setting to see the designs first hand at the project’s celebration exhibition. It was impressive how the students had immersed themselves in the process. We thoroughly enjoyed being a part of their DesignLab Nation journey here at Melrose!

A big thank you for the support to our colleagues in Operations and Production for sharing their expertise, and everyone who took part in the sessions.

DesignLab Nation is part of the V&A’s National Schools Programme, which aims to inspire the next generation of designers, makers and innovators and expand the reach of the V&A collections. The programme brings together secondary schools in partnership with regional museums, designers, industries, and the V&A to engage students and support teachers through in-depth design projects.
